QQM uses only very fine quality gemstones including rubies from Burma, and sapphires from Sri Lanka or Madagascar. Black rhodium (blackened gold) and Black diamonds coloured with irradiation are used in some designs for a vintage feeling.
The foundations of the brand are Qiqi’s designs and the professional skills of Michael and his craftsmen, all working to his rigorous standards of quality control. He works personally with his technical team through every step in the process, from making the moulds to construction and finishing. He is dedicated, he says, to bringing his partner’s inspirations to full realisation.
“Qiqi has a very clear idea as to what she wants, with a clear concept behind each piece. It’s very good working with her,” he says.
An important motif of Qiqi’s designs is the cross, which she says derives from the emblem’s importance - along with the crown - to the culture of the city of Vienna where she grew up. “The cross is for anytime, for wearing any way, and always a fashion statement,” she says. “The cross and the crown represent my favourite memories as I grew up from child to girl to woman. The cross has brought me joy and calm. I have collected many crosses throughout the years, and a few precious tiaras too.”
“I wish to introduce more colours and stones, so the palette is more vibrant and the mood more playful. It’s about independence and individuality,” says Qiqi, “It’s important to express yourself.”
“It’s vintage yet youthful in appeal,” says Michael. “The process has to be meticulous and executed to perfection, or the materials would be ruined. That’s where perfect planning at the design stage is important. That’s where I find real joy working with Qiqi - she conceives the pieces so well that I can execute that perfectly. Both Qiqi and I believe in using the finest possible, as heritage is very important to both of us. We only want to pass on the best to the next generation - and to the customer.”
